Makeup: Ways to wear Glitters
Your Glitter Look: Crystal Eyes
The dictionary definition of glitter? "To make a brilliant show." Who doesn't want that? The fall runways were full of brilliance: undereye crystals at Rodarte, here; dreamy pale green shimmer at Versace couture; metal-dipped lids at Zac Posen. "There's a whimsy about glitter," says L'Oréal Paris makeup artist Sir John. "Plus, when the weather gets cold, we want to go to a sparkly place."

The How-To
To do the Rodarte eye (use no more than five or six crystals (try Make Up For Ever Crystal Strass, $21,makeupforever.com), only in the center (not all the way across), right up against the lower lash line. (Use a toothpick to apply eyelash glue to the back of the crystal, then tweezers to set in place.) Forgo eyeshadow and finish with a ton of mascara; Sir John loves L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Superstar Mascara ($9.99, target.com).

Your Glitter Look: A Little "Glamouflage"
Some chunky sparkled eyes are runway-chic but too dramatic in real life. Your solution: "Embrace the trend in a minimal way," Sir John advises. He calls it "glamouflaging." "Just a strip of glitter or a few sparkles can bring a great punctuation to the eye," he adds.

The How-To
For finer sparkles, like the glitzy palette seen at Temperley London on the previous slide, use clear lip balm on the lid before applying loose glitter (we like MAC Glitter in 3D Silver, $22, maccosmetics.com), suggests makeup artist Nick Barose.

Your Glitter Look: Gilded Lids
Metallics in the gold, silver, and bronze family "are flattering on everyone," says Sir John. "It's a Game of Thrones feel but glamorous and beautiful." First find your most flattering metallic (a simple rule: "If you're more fair, go silver, and for warmer and darker skin tones, gold," says Barose), then layer it.

The How-To
"Swipe a darker, nonmetallic eyeshadow shade across the lid and in the crease to define and create depth, then use a flat brush to top with a metallic shade, focusing on the center so it catches the light," adds Barose. Make sure your chosen metallic (we like Stila Magnificent Metals Shadow in Comex Copper, $32, macys.com), complements your skin or hair, not your outfit. "Matching to your clothes is too literal and reads young," says Sir John.

Your Glitter Look: A Wash of Colored Shimmer
Consider the soft-focus sheen at Versace, here, your gateway glitter—little effort to apply and big visual impact. The trick, says Barose: Go for muted metallic colors rather than brights. "I like pink for those with fair skin, peach for medium tones, and golden greens or coppery bronzes for darker complexions," he adds.

The How-To
An exact how-to from Topshop beauty consultant Hannah Murray: Start by defining the eye with a liner or chubby crayon in your shimmer of choice (she uses Topshop Smoke Stick in Magic Garden, $10, topshop.com). Then use fingers to blend your glittery shadow onto the lid (try Topshop Eyes Mono in Oxide, $12, topshop.com). If you want a more dramatic impact, Barose suggests applying powder shadow (try Lancôme Color Design Eye Shadow in Kitten Heel, $20, lancome.com) with a flat, wet brush. "The moisture will bring out more shimmer," he says.
